Public Sale of Alien Enemies Properties

During the Civil War both the U.S. and the Confederacy passed laws that allowed the confiscation of property owned by supporters of the other side of the war ("Alien Enemies").  The law also required the reporting of such property.

There were numerous families in the Honey Grove area who remained loyal to the Union.  One such family was the Holloways.  In 1861 members of the Holloway family left Texas in a wagon train for California.  We believe from documents we have reviewed that B. S. Walcott was a friend of the Holloway family.  He may have bought the Holloway properties to provide funds to his friends to allow them to travel to California.

The document below is from the collection of Deidra Jackson, a descendant of the Walcott family.   We have been told that documents such as this are rarely in the public domain, and are posting it here for researchers.
